Under the beautiful title Plaisirs inconnus [Unknown pleasures] are hidden choreographers, composers, lighting engineers, stage designers and costume designers that have accepted to stay in the shadows. The result is a success and brings light to the company once again.
The idea is singular but far from absurd: creating a ballet where creators remain anonymous to let shine the talent of a company, the CCN – Ballet de Lorraine. Petter Jacobsson, its artistic director, can be proud of his work, presented as a world premiere in London. Five choreographers sign the segments of this ballet with several interludes. One feels at each instant the pleasure that was had (although it remains unknown!). Between an irreverent tribute to American modern dance and a rereading of Ravel’s Bolero, Plaisirs inconnus offers to view a palette of choreographic sensations. One may recognise a certain type of writing; one can play with this game of dancing riddles. Creations that upset our certainties so are rare. Then little by little, one forgets these questions to properly savour this exercise of style of such mad freedom. Because Plaisirs inconnus is also and especially that: a celebration of dance for those experiencing it. A pleasure to be shared.
