Emanuel Gat / Ensemble Modern
For his stay in Chaillot, Emanuel Gat presents Story Water, built around an encounter between dance and music. With the Ensemble Modern, the choreographer and his dancers take the plunge.
From piece to piece, Emanuel Gat imposes a chiselled writing of movement. Story Water testifies to this : a place for confluence where two troupes, Emanuel Gat Dance and the Ensemble Modern of Frankfurt, come to meet. This story of water is built around the simple idea of music and choreography dialoguing on stage, like two distinct entities committed in real time to an invitation to dialogue rather than mutual illustration. With three scores – by Pierre Boulez, Rebecca Saunders and Emanuel Gat with the musicians of the Ensemble Modern – dance seems to flow easily. For Emanuel Gat, choreographers are about interactions rather than movement, individuals rather than compositions, concrete situations rather than ideas and concepts. In his eyes, “the water is that of the poet, the story is that of the dancer’s body, the music that is played, the line and the colour, the history of light that shows and hides at the same time, infinitely free and indefinitely taken in the body’s shield”.
