Ignoring the boundaries of sex, Abou Lagraa composes an ode to the contradictions of desire so that, thanks to dance, we can at last become “marvellous beings, truer than true, more real than real”.
Two men, three women. Created in 2017 on the title of a Jimmy Page song, Wonderful One is a vibrant anthem to the freedom of the body. The freedom to accept a gesture “that is at once masculine and feminine”, the freedom to assert oneself beyond the questions of genre, the freedom to stage a dance that is at once very carnal and filled with spirituality, on the vocal spirals of Monteverdi (Il combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda) but also the Egyptian Oum Kalthoum and the Lebanese Sister Marie Keyrouz. Since his first pieces, at the start of the year 2000 with his company La Baraka, Abou Lagraa has been working relentlessly to give to each dancer “the time and the space to be marvellously alive”. The duo of masculine love is answered by the combative strength of the feminine trio, and even if the scenography opposes them – a cube placed high for the first, mobile wooden lattices for the others – the world of men and of women look to get lost in each individual, in a voluptuous reconciliation.
