After the shock of Skid performed last season at Chaillot, Damien Jalet presents Vessel, the result of a collaboration with the Japanese visual artist Kohei Nawa.

The former dancer Damien Jalet has turned into an acclaimed choreographer. Commissions for companies such as the GöteborgsOperans Danskompani, collaborations with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui or the director Gilles Delmas have gone down in history. Vessel was born from an encounter with Kohei Nawa, a visionary sculptor, on the occasion of a residency at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto in 2015. The two artists worked using a Japanese material with fascinating properties, the katakuriko, a sort of potato starch that is at once solid and liquid, a duality that can be found in the human body. “Sculpture and dance are both linked to the body as receptacles for human passions,” resumes Damien Jalet. This “vessel” talks of life, death, but also cycles to create a dynamic fusion between the stage and the bodies of the dancers in a perpetual transformation of forms. Under our gaze and in the same impetus, everything becomes organic. Identities are confused, canvases come alive. The seven dancers are “condemned” to a form of anonymity as you barely ever see their face. With the music of the young composer Marihiko Hara and Ryûichi Sakamoto, this creation contains something intimate and sensual, at the service of a form of regeneration.
